As the COVID-19 pandemic hit Iceland in the spring of 2020, some industries were hit hard by the restrictions aimed at minimizing the spread of the virus. This was particularly the case in the tourism industry, where the number of employees dropped from around 26,000 in the first quarter of 2020 to less than 15,000 at its lowest in the first quarter of 2021. By the third quarter of 2023, 34,000 people were employed in the tourism industry in Iceland. Accommodation and food services as well as the transportation and storage industry were also hit hard by the pandemic.
