Argentina: number of startups 2023, by city
The Argentine startup ecosystem
In 2020, Argentina and Brazil concentrated over 80 percent of the startup ecosystem value in Latin America. Argentina alone accounted for 45 percent of the total. This South American nation's ecosystem was valued at 99 billion U.S. dollars that year, followed closely by Brazil, whose ecosystem's value stood at 91 billion dollars. In 2022, Buenos Aires topped the list of best cities for startups in Argentina, registering a total score of 10.94. That year, the country’s capital and Córdoba also appeared in the ranking of top cities for startups in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Female entrepreneurship
Female entrepreneurship has been on the rise in Latin America, pushing against a male-dominated environment in the business sector. It continues to encounter, however, remarkable obstacles. For instance, female founded start-ups in Latin America received a total investment of 14 million U.S. dollars in 2019, an investment that dropped to zero in 2020. In contrast, funding for start-ups in the region founded only by men increased during this time period, growing to approximately 3.83 billion dollars in 2020.Regarding business ownership, out of the total business owners in Argentina, approximately 26 percent were women. The entrepreneurial activity rate was relatively low both among male and female Argentinians, at 9.6 and 6.9 percent, respectively. Argentina’s female entrepreneurial activity rate was remarkably distant from that of other Latin American countries, like Ecuador and Colombia, where it exceeded 30 percent. By contrast, even if the entrepreneurial activity rate among women in Argentina was not particularly high, it can be said that most females started their business because it was their choice, and not out of necessity. In 2021, six Latin American countries had over 81 percent of their female entrepreneurs starting a business because there were no better options. By contrast, the necessity-driven entrepreneurship rate in Argentina stood at 35.7 percent in the case of women.
