Passenger car registrations in Finland 2016-2023, by fuel type
In recent years, the registrations of new diesel-fueled passenger cars decreased significantly in Finland. While in 2016 roughly 39,500 new diesel cars were registered, the figure from 2022 was over 34,400 less. Hybrid cars and cars using alternative fuel types, such as electricity and natural gas, showed an opposite trend in the registration numbers.
Increasing trend of electric passenger cars
The trend of increasing electric passenger car registrations could be seen in the registration numbers of Tesla cars. While the annual number of new car registrations first fluctuated, the registrations nevertheless rose from two cars in 2013 to over 6,100 cars in 2023.
Tesla Motors as the leading brand of electric cars
Tesla ranked as the leading brand of electric passenger cars in the country, having the highest number of electric cars in traffic as of 2023. In 2021, the most popular model of the brand was the four-door sedan Model 3 with more than 3,695 vehicles.
