The number of alternating current (AC) charging points for electric vehicles in ASEAN countries was projected to amount to around 117.3 thousand by 2026. Since batteries can only be charged with direct current (DC) power, most electric vehicles are equipped with an onboard AC-to-DC converter, allowing for the majority of low-power public charging stations to be AC stations. So-called DC charging stations provide a bigger converter that is already built into the station itself, therefore enabling faster charging times.
