China has become one of the world’s largest and most rapidly growing online gaming markets. As of 2013, the market volume of China online gaming had amounted to 89.2 billion yuan and is estimated to reach 197 billion yuan by 2018. As of 2014, 365.85 million Chinese internet users were actively playing online games. China had about 650 million internet users by the end of 2014, and the potential of the online gaming segment is very strong.
Over the last decade, revenues generated from online gaming in China had increased significantly from a mere 2.57 billion yuan in 2004 to 44.61 billion yuan in 2011 - a number that is still growing steadily. During the third quarter 2014, the mobile gaming market in China had generated about seven billion yuan in revenue. When compared to other BRIC countries, China’s mobile gaming market was more than seven times as large as the mobile gaming markets in Russia, Brazil and India combined.
Tencent, one of the major Chinese internet players, had dominated the Chinese online gaming market, generating revenues of approximately 45 billion yuan in 2014. Other major online game companies in China include NetEase, Changyou and Perfect World.
