The healthcare sector was the most greenhouse gas intensive real estate sector in 2020 according to a survey among 88 listed real estate companies with a total market cap of 262 billion euros in Europe. A square meter of a healthcare building had a greenhouse gas intensity of 38 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year, while for a self-storage building this figure was 5.75 kilograms per square meter. The residential sector ranked second with an annual per square meter greenhouse gas intensity of 27 kilograms of carbon dioxide.
