As of January 2021, 55 percent of Americans who identified as Democrats felt that Twitter's choice to permanently suspend former President Donald Trump from the social media platform due to "risk of further incitement of violence" was too little, too late. The corresponding figure among Republicans was just 18 percent who felt this way. In contrast, 63 percent of surveyed Republicans felt concerned that social media companies are censoring politicians or the government, whereas only 20 percent of Democrats felt this way.
With the audience shifting away from traditional mass media, social media has become an increasingly powerful political tool recently.
